State of the WNBA .....

First off, we going pink for this post for the 25th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Second, allow me to say congratz to the Pheonix Mercury, for winning their second chip in three seasons as they beat the Indiana Fever in 5. Diana Taurasi grabbed the MVP that does counts and look like the female version of King James. Dirty Diana got next right now....Respect the UCONN!

HoopKing was pondering his thoughts as he was entertain and embraced watching the WNBA Finals and came away encouraged that the Ladies Association would thrive in the midst of doubt for years to come. First off, the WNBA is stacked with a generation of players who just athletically, can take the league to new heights. The woman's game by far, is the best fundamentally sound hoop game on the planet Earth...Yes I Said It. As I watched this Finals, I begin to think of the college game and what talent it will produce and already has produced over the last few years. Their is a level of maturity at a different level than the men, most notably staying 4 years in college notably helps, but their respect for team oriented play gets lost in the process. HoopKing appreciates this more than ever.

It's not all about YouTube dunks and handles or Sportscenter Top 10, that has corrupted the minds of many people out their, but love and appreciation for the greatest team sport in the world, the Roundball. The woman's game does it the finest level. And I believe they fall victim in this process.

Their is a strong foundation for the WNBA to build upon and gain notoriety. They got the players...(Candace Parker(CP3), Diana Taurasi(Dirty Diana...Games Nasty), Tamika Catchings(The Lady Goods), Sue Bird(Lady Nash), Katie Douglas( The Ultimate Team Player), Cappie Pondexter(Hit The Youtube Clips......).

They got the markets to thrive....NYC, The Windy City, City of Angels, Valley of the Sun.
The notable endorsers ring from the NBA game....you see them about everywhere in the arenas during the summer.

To me, if I was the Ladies Association, I would continue pushing my product with the superstars that carry your league and embrace the woman's college game with the current players. Also, use the NBA venues as a positive, ala NBA All-Star weekend. Then market the season in every which way possible through the tube, and sponsor events, even online.
The WNBA will continue to have its success and make it through and put the HoopGame at another level unseen for the future. Real Hoops Fan feel me....All it takes is one.

Throwing Dueces In The Twin Cities...

Over the early week, the focus was squarely on the Twin Cities as they hosted two of the the most memorable games in there beloved sports their. On Monday night in the "Triple H" Dome, the Brett Favre Vikings....I mean Minnesota Vikings, took down the Green Bay Packers in a memorable game in the Brett Favre lore as they won 30-23 behind the old wily vet. DE Jared Allen wrecked havoc of the edge, CB Antoine Winfield played man amongst boys and the Vikings took home a win against their arch rivals and a 4-0 record. The game registered a 13.2 Nielsen ratings on the World Wide Leader(ESPN). Highest rated sports broadcast in tube history....Man, Brettland is the man.

Also, 2night the Minnesota Twins got all dramatic on kids as they won a huge AL Central tiebreaker game against the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers became the first team in major league history to blow a three-game lead with four games left. The game was 12 innings of high intense playoff atmosphere baseball in the Homer Dome as the Twins won 6-5. Alexi Casilla singled home the winning run with one out. The Twins now have their fifth division title in eight years.
“This is the most unbelievable game I’ve ever played or seen,” Twinkies shortstop Orlando Cabrera said.

They extend the Homer Dome one more week at least, before they close the doors for a new ballpark next year. Up next....the Evil Empire(NY Yankees) 2morrow night in the Bronx. And for stat buffs...New York is 7-0 against Minnesota this season.

The two best in the WNBA take their place on the games biggest stage as they square of in the WNBA Finals. The Pheonix Mercury and Indiana Fever begin their five-game series 2night in Pheonix to be seen on the "Deuce"(ESPN2). Both teams came off of 3 games set as the Mercury defeated the LA Sparks and the Fever defeated the Detroit Shock. This is Pheonix's second trip to the Finals(07') and its the first ever for Indiana.
Both teams boasts two of the games best tandems:

Pheonix has two of the best in WNBA MVP Diana Taurasi and Cappie Pondexter (Lady can light it up) former Finals MVP.

Indiana has Defensive Player of the Year Tamika Catchings(The Goods) and Katie Douglas who brings that winner's mentality.

HoopKing's Thoughts....The Series boasts Pheonix's high-octane offense to Indiana's physicality and defensive prowess. Can Pheonix get off on a Indiana's D and who will step up for the Mercury opposite the Big 2. Can Indiana supply enough D to hold off Pheonix and make this a half court series....Mercury in 5.

Was scrolling the OT Roster and seen this video. Hakeem Olajuwon, who in my opinion is the best "skilled" post player outside Kareem and Timothy, drops some post knowledge to Hasheem Thabeet, the Grizzlies rookie center and the Black Mamba.... Kobe "Bean" in a session in Houston this month. Man, the best gets better and Hasheem goes back 2 school in a much needed lesson...Take a look.

Key Signings Before Training Camp....

Man I can literally hear the fresh sneaks squealing on the hardwood and those two orange hoops rattling after a Lister Blisters(Big Ups Kemp circa 92') and kids turning ankles at a historic rate....Well no really but you get the hint. Basketball season is slowly approaching and in the Association some "key moves" were made this week to ensure some veterans security at least through next year.
The New York Knicks made some noise bringing back the heart and soul of their team in PF David Lee(A walking double double) and Mr. Kryptonite himself G Nate Robinson. Lee , has secured a deal of around 7 million, possibly eight million, if the Knicks make noise next year and secure a playoff spot. Nate Rob, is close 2 signing a deal over the 2.9 mil qualifying offer that was offer earlier this summer.
That gives the Knicks an opportunity to put pieces in the right place for a move upward this year. But we all know that their in a New York State of Mind... Lebron Status next year.

Ray Felton has also signed one-year, $5.5 million qualifying offer, remaining as the starting PG of the Charlotte Bobcats, and Flip Murray has signed a deal to rock the BET Cats jersey next year. Charlotte has a solid backcourt and should make some noise for a playoff spot.

WNBA Playoffs....Expect Great

It's Playoff Time in the Association For The Ladies.....And OT Shows Love Always To The WNBA. The 2009 Playoffs gives some interesting series to begin with.
The Western Conference boasts 3 teams who have won "chips" this decade including last years WC Champ, The San Antonio Silverstars. Pheonix Mercury can score like their NBA brethren, as they led the league in scoring and also boasts the league's best record. Seattle Storm has a loaded squad headed by Lauren Jackson, Sue Bird and Swin Cash. And the LA Sparks gives you Candace" Lady CP3" Parker, with Future H.O.F.'s Lisa Leslie and Tina Thompson.
In the East, you got familiar faces in new places taking aim at the title. Defending WNBA champ, the Detroit Shock come into this thing as the hottest team in the League and is no doubt a favorite as they are led by Deanna Nolan and Katie Smith. The Atlanta Dream, making it first playoff appearance, bring in a young nucleus headed by Iziane Castro Marques and Angel McCoughtry, one best young talents in the woman's game.
No.1 seed Indiana Fever has the East best record and possibly best player in Tamika Catchings and All Star Katie Douglas. The Washington Mystics have a talented core of Alana Beard, Monique Currie and Crystal Langhorne.

Honoring The Ol Skool- George Gervin

Flat Out.....Cold As Ice! OT loves the Ol Skool and no one better than George Gervin. To me, one of the smoothest players to grace the hardwood. Coming straight out the 313, the "D", Gervin's flair combined with his skill, and athleticism on a 6-7 frame, made this man unguardable. His signature "finger role" was to me the greatest perform shot outside the sky hook.

But this man offensive arsenal is undeniably one of the best the hoop game has ever graced and seen. Coming out of Eastern Michigan and Long Beach State, "Ice" flourished in the ABA with the Virginia Squires and San Antonio Spurs. He has the most scoring titles for a 2 Guard other than that man named Jordan. Averaging 25pts, 5rbs, 2asst per game, Gervin put his imprint on the game and had significant impact on the players that came after. He was like something before it's time. Sort of unseen....But it was simply a man cold as ice. One last thing...This Is Just The way The Lord Planned It", "Ice be cool"....

Iverson's Impact On Memphis.....

As you know by now, Allen Iverson is headed to the Memphis Grizzlies. AI's decision came after last week's meeting with Grizzlies owner Michael Heisley, general manager Chris Wallace and head coach Lionel Hollins. Iverson, 34, will play for a contract that pays $3.5 million (what the Griz have left under the salary cap) and the deal will be laden with incentives.
On court, this changes the dynamics at least from the outside looking in at the Grizzlies from a roster standpoint. Memphis is key by a young back-court with O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley and already have a frontline with All-Star to be Rudy Gay who strength is his ability to score the ball and Zach Randolph, a free agent who brings baggage but is talented as anyone on the block. They just drafted Hashim Thabeet and Sam Young and have a promising big in Darrell Arthur. What I'm saying, this team is loaded with young talent and is this the right move to make?
Is Iverson going to play on the ball opposite O.J. Mayo to start? That's the most realistic move in this deal it seems, but their stock with young PG's who are more distributor than scorer. Mike Conley and Marcus Williams. Iverson can facilitate but needs the rocks and this team needs free flowing ball movement more than his scoring. They got scorers in Mayo, Gay, Marko Jaric plus the addition of Zach Randolph gives them a post presence they need.

If Iverson comes of the bench, it's his best move. Hollins can keep a solid starting five and bring a dominate scorer off the bench with his second unit and someone to finish games. In reality either way Iverson plays starter minutes, no matter the situation. This Memphis team is loaded with young fellas and they will make noise. Just how soon and is Iverson that answer?

Touchdown Jesus Invades The Big House...

This Is Blasphemy for a kid reppin the 614, but it's all about the Midwest and putting the Forth Coast on the map. Today, Charlie Weis and his Fighting Irish of Notre Dame invade the Big House to face Rich Rodriguez and his Michigan Wolverines in a match-up of not only a rivalry statement but national respect as both these programs been down lately. Both teams cruised to easy vic's in their openers as UM took down Western Mich. and Notre Dame destroy a WAC Nevada team with Touchdown Jesus looking over the Golden Dome. Not sure what today brings as far as an evaluation of how good these teams are but, honestly, College Football NEEDS THESE TWO PROGRAMS to be legit Top 25 teams. They are two of 4 midwest programs that are tradtional powers (OSU and Nebraska others) and hold prestige in college football lore. The Midwest will be on display heavy from the Big House.... Prediction......Meteor showers at kick-off(highly unlikely)....Just want to be entertain!

The answer to this question is, you better make a statement. Simply put. The #8 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes will host the #3 ranked USC Trojans in the Columbus, Ohio from the HORSESHOE.
Much has been heralded about the Buckeyes recent struggles against top 10 teams. This is ample opportunity for the Silver Bullets to makes some noise. Uncle Pete brings another sickly talented Trojans team into a season with expectations only at the highest premium.
Not really going to dabble in pre-game analysis, but the keys to this game in my mind are both teams line play and who can run the ball effectively to set up the pass. Both teams run variations of a Pro-Style offense. Also can if the Buckeyes can put pressure on Frosh Matt Barkley....It could get interesting. And one more...TP. Young fella is a flat-out stud, and if he can make plays, Much respect to USC, I'm supremely confident in Ohio State. I Rep the O-H-I-O!

The Answer To This Question....

The Answer to this question is the answer we're all trying to know.....Does Allen Iverson still have it?
A.I. is no doubt one of best to ever lace the kicks on the hardwood. I always tell people that Iverson is a living icon in America 2day, whether you embrace it or not. His impact on young America still stands even 2day after many years.
On court, A.I. can still score at an unbelievable clip and flashes that brilliance from early 2000's.
Iverson, 34, though, it's questions whether he can defend still at a good level( great help defender in prime), and be a distributor rather than shoot-first lead guard. He doesn't have much leverage after sitting out the end of last year with injury and refuse to come off the bench with Detroit. He can still produce with the ball in hand, but has trouble according to the "experts", making his teammates better. That's why I believe that he is still unsigned with a NBA team. And I know, there is teams that need his services.
But as the possible suitors, the Memphis Grizzlies probably give him the best deal in terms of dollars but I truly believe if the Charlotte Bobcats muster up a deal it could be best for A.I. in terms of this....Charlotte needs a true no.1 scorer and shooting guard and he gives a veteran presence to young team. He doesn't have to worry about distributing and could play off the ball defensively against smaller guards and last...Larry Brown.
When with Larry Brown, Iverson had his most successful years and flourished under him.
Man, I love this dude, he's great 4 the game, and I hope he gets signed quickly before training camp, whether in Memphis, Charlotte, Miami or anywhere.

Reflection On Bolt's WR Performance

It took me about seven times to rewind the DVR and capture the greatness of Usain Bolt. As he ran those 100m in 9.58 sec, I simply was awe, watching dude perform at the highest level of any human to step on a track. One thing I overheard was that this man may not have been at his best. He may be faster and more explosive as he re-gains form from a year of injury and such and fully gets embedded back in track. This kid might run an 8 sec race before it's all set and done. I'm out like Bolt off the blocks...

The State of The Timberwolves......Man, much uncertainty but crazy potential embedded in this team. Obviously adding for the future by subtraction in salary and has some young pieces to work with in the near years. First, Big Ups 2 adding Kurt Rambis(my dude in the purple and gold), former Laker great and assistant/head coach. He will bring a winning pedigree and a presence that these young kids need in the Twin Cities. Winning 4 "Chips" with the in the LakeShow 80's as a key member, and titles as an assistant coach.

The T-Wolves cleaned house like "Scrubble Bubble" on your toilet. Moving, their Head coach/GM Kevin McHale as well as numerous impact players on roster, most notably Randy Foye and Mike Miller. Still, with All-Star caliber Al Jefferson and rebound machine Kevin Love , you begin your build with the post game needed for success in the NBA. Big Al posted serious number with 23 ppg and 11 boards through 50 games(shoulda been an All-Star) before going down with an ACL injury. It'll be interesting to view as he progress and get back after a tough injury.
With Love amongst a group of young talent which includes, Corey Brewer, Jonny Flynn and "Little Ricky" Rubio (Kid needs to sign asap) , this team is headed within the right direction...a true 2 guard wouldn't hurt with depth across that front line...but I like the way this team is going....but only time will tell. Big job For Big Al to lead this rebuild. But kid boasts that workmanlike, get it done game, so I'm confident in the Twin Cities.

The Flu Game Air Jordan Retro XII is a remake of sorts similar to its predecessor the Black/Red Air Jordan XII. The Flu Game Air Jordan Retro XII will feature a Black nubuck upper, instead of the original Black leather upper, as well as features that pay homage to the Flu Game. The Impact Of Shard's News

By now, Rashard Lewis news of the banned substance, was embedded into our conscious, or at least that of hoop fans. As, you may know or not, Shard Lewis was suspended for his first 10 games of the 2009-10 season for an elevated testosterone level. Lewis has since come out and gave apology through statement. I pray that Rashard will thoroughly work this out with the Orlando Magic and the NBA. It could possibly take a hit to the NBA through "PR" but I doubt the effect will stick. The NBA is least through all major sports to have these types of instances. But this is definately left open for discussion.
The the rest of the association will no doubt go full throttle though, in preparing it's team personnel, front office, training/medical staff and players, that it needs to be profound in its understanding to what substances are banned by the League.

Yo! The Black Shoes, The Black Socks, The Baggy Shorts, 5 All Americans, The Playground Game...The Fab Five!(My Faves)
Just reflecting upon the impact the Fab 5 (Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson, Jimmy King) and realizing that these dudes put that "juice" to the game and transcended it beyond measure. Even though they didn't win the "chip" in 92' or 93', they embedded a culture that still relevant in college basketball today. From the look to the improvisation of today's hoop game, today's game is at it's peak in terms of the creativity and the style in terms of play and individuals that make the game so special. That brotherhood that bonded 5 All-Americans created an aura that is unmatched on any level and iconic stature that only scene upon pro athletes.
Who knew a kid from the 614 would show love & appreciation to the 734. Real talk, it's all One Love In This Game! Hail to The Victors!

Man, my Christmas came early! I never been more excited for a season in any sport, let alone HoopKing's favorite. The NBA! On Christmas Day, while we are unwrapping the gifts and eating on delicious cookies left for Santa....Ah Tis The Season, and On This Day, The Cleveland Cavaliers are playing the Los Angeles Lakers in Staples(LA) on ABC in the highlight game of the day.
This is the most anticipated matchup of the early season and it should be a good one. Happy Early Holidays!

KD Or King James?

Could it be that someone has the edge on the King? Word coming out of USA Basketball Mini Camp is that Kevin Durant possibly down the line could be better than Lebron James. NBA columnist Sam Smith commented on such the other day on Bulls.com:
"It’s being whispered now among NBA types because, I believe, under a secret NBA/ESPN provision you are not permitted to say aloud anything that might be interpreted to suggest LeBron James isn’t the best thing to ever happen in anyone’s life. But sitting in the stands in Las Vegas at the USA Basketball mini-camp and hearing NBA coaches and general managers, the gasps have been for Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant. I’ve now heard more than one say Durant could be a better player than James given Durant’s combination of amazing size at about 6-10 and pure shooting stroke. And he’s still 20. The feeling is Durant is on the brink of being a 30 per game scorer. Plus, Durant is a serious worker."(Bulls.com)
Real talk, I admire both players games. Though, Durant is on another level skill wise than most of the NBA. His body will mature but that's the only knock on him. This dude is the next superstar in my mind.

Clearly D-Wade was the centerpiece for Converse and carried the brand this decade, but the switch to Jordan will allow Wade make more of a name for himself in the shoe game.

Lakers; Odom Still Cant Negotiate Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers and FA forward Lamar Odom have suspended talks for now on a contract offer extended. Odom and the Lakers apparently had reached an an agreement on a three year; 27 million offer for Odom heading into last weekend. But Odom was dissatisfied at the Lakers reluctance to extend an offer for more than three years in length and spent the past few days weighing his options. Odom has recieved interest from the Dallas Mavericks and the Miami Heat.

"Odom would have the ability with either the Heat or the Mavericks to sign a three-year, $19 million contract and negotiate a new deal with full Larry Bird rights in the summer of 2012 or take a five-year deal worth $34 million to bank more overall money, along with the state-tax benefits, than he could in a new three-year deal with the Lakers."(ESPN)

Lamar Odom versatility is difficult to simulate and lose if you've had him. There is no doubt that Odom, if he re-signs with the Lakers that LA will undoubtely be the WC favorites and NBA favorites not only for next season but for the next few. Also, a sleeper team that could emerge is the Portland Trailblazers who could have cap-room available if they lose Paul Millsap to Utah who can sign his offer sheet.

McGrady honors Dafur; Wear No.3

Tracy McGrady will make a number change from his infamous no.1 to no.3. T-Mac is making the switch to no.3 to promote his humanitarian efforts in the Darfur region of the Sudan. He filmed the documentary on his summer 2007 visits to refugee camps in the region. The documentary, "3 Points," is set for release this fall. The title refers to goals of peace, protection and punishment.

McGrady has been a helping hand and a strong advocate for change in Darfur. Not to mention T-Mac wore No.3 in high school as well. He'll look to rebound this at some point this season after microfracture surgery on his left knee in late February. Doctors say he needs up to 12 months to recover.

After leading USA Basketball to their first gold medal since the 2000 Olympics, Hall of Fame Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski will coach Team USA for through the 2010 World Championships in Turkey, and the 2012 Olympics in London. USA managing director Jerry Colangelo would love to keep the current nucleus of the gold medal team with some new pieces added to ensure a repeat for 2012 as well as the 2010 World Championships. The 2009 NBA off-season has been quite interesting to say the least. With big moves happening faster than Usain Bolt 100 M, the NBA struck lightning again with two of its stars re-locating to different teams. Over the weekend veterans Rasheed Wallace and Hedo Turkoglu signed deals with the Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors respectively.

Coming off his best season in his NBA career which included a NBA Finals appearance with the Orlando Magic, Hedo Turkoglu struck big with Toronto Raptors. "Turkey Jordan" will sign a 5-year deal worth 53 million. Turkoglu was reported to signed with Portland giving them a veteran playmaker with a young and upcoming team but due to personal reasons he felt Toronto was a better fit. He should play a vital role along with Chris Bosh to bring Toronto back to the playoffs.

Rasheed Wallace, the Bad Boy of this era left the Bad Boys franchise and will sign a deal for the mid-level exception(roughly 6 million) , bringing the Celtics one more proven winner and potentially as the title favorites puts them with a core of the Big 3(Pierce, Garnett, Allen) and Rajon Rondo with young talent on the bench waiting its turn. Former NFL great Steve McNair passed away Saturday in Nashville, Tennessee at 36 years old. McNair was the definition of a tough, gritty, immensely skilled player who's humbleness and leadership carried him to 13 successful season in the NFL playing for the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens. "Air" McNair was a three-time Pro Bowler who passed for 31,304 yards passing and 174 touchdowns during his career. 2003 Co-MVP of the NFL with Peyton Manning, McNair battle through injuries which plagued him but ultimately defined him as one of the best players of his generation. "Air" McNair played in the 2000 Super Bowl, arguably one of the greatest games ever played. My thoughts and prayers go out to the McNair family and friends during these trying times. R.I.P. University of Cincinnati Men's basketball coach Mick Cronin announced Monday that Lance "Born Ready" Stephenson a 2009 McDonald's High School All-American out of Brooklyn, New York's Abraham Lincoln High School , has signed a financial aid agreement with the Bearcats and will join the team for the 2009-10 season.
Stephenson joins the Bearcats after an illustrious prep career at Lincoln. His senior season he posted averages of 28.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.9 assists to earning him Class AA New York State Sports Writers Association Player of the Year honors his senior year. He is New York State all-time leading scorer with 2,946 points.
With Stephenson heading to UC, he forms a nice trio with Deontae Vaughn and Yancy Gates. Look for Bearcats will make serious noise next year in the Big East conference.

The 2009 NBA Draft was interesting to say the least in many aspects Thursday evening. From Blake Griffin going No. 1 overall to the Timberwolves PG infatuation, the international influx and teams economic situations dictating how they draft and trade. 2009 was a solid draft overall and many players should have a major impact on their squads, especially veteran teams selecting proven players at the college level.

Key injuries to a talented roster with notable injuries to Baron Davis & Marcus Camby set the Clippers back. Coach Mike Dunleavy only had one successful season since being in a LA( WC Semifinal Lost to the Suns in 2006 in 7 Games), but that seems like ancient times in Clipper Land.

Likely Draft Pick - BLAKE GRIFFIN [Oklahoma F]

Superior athleticism which allows him to be dominant rebounder. Can score from 18ft in and runs floor like a gazelle. EXPLOSIVE... Has to improve shooting ability with size, but game should translate well to the NBA.

Notables- F Rudy Gay, SG O.J. Mayo, G Marko Jaric
This team is loaded with young talent primarily on the perimeter headed by Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo. Had a good nucleus of players in 2007-08' but traded Pau Gasol and Juan Carlos Navarro went back to Europe. In serious rebuilding mode. Needs depth in the frontcourt but has young nucleus to a factor in a couple seasons.
Needs - PF Or C...Game changer on both ends of the floor, primarily defensive

Likely Draft Pick - Hasheem Thabeet [UCONN C]
Thabeet is reminiscent of another African-Big East product Dikembe Mutumbo. At 7-3, not too many bigs are as athletic and defensively dominant as Thabeet. Potential is off-the charts. Scary word with potential, but he could develop into a force in years to come. Dont expect immediate impact from Thabeet, sort of fitting that Greg Oden role, used in bunched minutes and situations that play to his strengths. Height, athleticism and good hands make his game stick out.

PICK 3 - OKLAHOMA THUNDER

08'-09' Overview - Record (23-59)
Notables - F/G Kevin Durant, F Jeff Green, G Russell Westbrook
The formal Seattle Sonics had a year of struggles that began with their coach P.J. Carlisimo being fired after starting 2-18 in their first 20 games. Young roster as is the Memphis Grizzlies, OKC is headed by a budding superstar Kevin Durant and solid young contributors Jeff Green, a versatile 3 and Russell Westbrook, an explosive PG in still learning the job. Durant is virtually unstoppable scoring the basketball, averaging 25 ppg and 6 boards. Skill set on the offensive end is reminiscent of an new school George Gervin.
Needs - Defensive-oriented big, athletic presence down low, Traditional PG.

Likely Draft Pick - James Harden [Arizona State SG]
Young Fella Gets Buckets!!! Mr. Harden is by far the most ready player in the draft opposite Griffin. First, has great feel for the game and understands the game through. Got a few game films of him and he’s unselfish but also knows when to take the game over and be that playmaker. Crafty! Veteran like presence at 19 yrs old... Reminds me of the 90’s style 2 Guards, tough, smooth and gets buckets.

PICK 4 - SACRAMENTO KINGS

08'-09’ Overview - Record (17-65)
Notables- G/F Kevin Martin, G Beno Udrih
Sacramento struggled immensely last season losing there best player Kevin Martin to 31 games, even though he averaged nearly 24.6ppg in the other 52 games. Their roster is depleted with no legit second scorer and no true depth at any position. There is a bright spot with Sac-Town with a young frontcourt of Spencer Hawes and Jason Thompson.
Needs- PG, Reliable second scorer.

Likely Draft Pick - Trade up, PG Ricky Rubio [Spain, DKV Jovenut]
Young Ricky got some “splaining” to do at the NBA level but has been filling it up in Europe since he was 14 yrs. old The purest point guard in the draft with his exceptional ball-handling and precision like passes. Played in Euro League with DKV Jovenut, so his experience is second to none in terms of talent in draft. He’s very talented skill set primarily his ball-handling and passing. Not overly athletic or explosive and needs to learn to hit that open jumper. Appear on Spain's silver medal squad in 2008 Olympics.

PICK 5 & 6 - MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES

08’-09’ Overview-Record (24-58)
Notables- PF Al Jefferson, PF Kevin Love, SF Mike Miller, G Randy Foye
Man, “Sota” is in needs of change heavily. With Big Al Jeff down low (dude is legit All-Star in waiting) getting 20 and 10 nightly and Love cleaning the glass in that Windex frame, their frontcourt is in good shape for the future. Starting 4-23 last year hurt badly, and Jefferson tearing his ACL hurt even worst, not to mention Kevin McHale went from the office to the bench nearly at midseason. The T-Wolves were dominant in January but it was a little late to make a move at that point. Guaranteed contracts and uncertainty at many spots got this team in need of the impossible. And yes KG said “Anything's possible!!!”
Needs- Frontcourt help; primarily length and depth at either guard spot

Likely Draft Picks - Trade or Tyreke Evans [Memphis PG]
The Kid nickname “Too Easy”, many times makes it look easy. Playing on the ball at Memphis, Evans known for his offensive skill at the 2 guard spot, showed his versatility to distribute the basketball. An NBA ready body at 6-5, 220, he plays with a smoothness to his game that’s beyond his years. Aggressive, uses body well and possesses a repertoire of offensive moves that gives defenders trouble. Shot has to improve at next level, but has the grown man game, not overly athletic but knows how to play basketball and gets the job done.

Stephen Curry [Davidson SG]
Stephen Curry is by far the best shooter in my mind that has stepped into the league in quite some time. Combo style guard that can “light it up” like Usher back in the day. Lovely shot mechanics and is just beautiful to watch on the offensive end. Can create, distribute with a heady presence. Not overly athletic and has trouble with bigger guards who defend him, but in the right system he can flourish immensely. Good defensive presence that averaged nearly 3 picks a game. Star presence and fills seats. Dude is legit…Had 44 points, 2 steals in game vs. Oklahoma, which in the same game; Griffin had 25 pts and 21 boards.

PICK 7 - GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS

08’-09’ Overview- Record (29-53)
Notables- SG Monta Ellis, F Stephen Jackson, SG Corey Maggette, G Jamal Crawford
No hyphy movement in the Bay Area in terms of Golden State last year. With GS losing their emotional and on-court leader Baron Davis, they struggled out the gates and disappointed severly. Ellis was out until January, Al Harrington got traded and Nellie ball went downhill from there. This team though is the most talented team in the lottery opposite Washington and by my prediction with the right draft pick and a little passion to play ball next year, Warriors will be back in the playoffs next year.
Needs- Depends what they think of Ellis, a 1 or 2? Post Presence Defensively down low, Leadership

Likely Draft Pick - Jordan Hill [Arizona F]
Kid put in work down in Tucson this past season. Hill has some work to do in the league, though he does boast a legit upside, where with coaching and progress, Hill could develop into a threat on both ends of the court. Crazy athletic with wiry frame, can rebound at an enormous clip and shows aggression in play. Hustles hard. Nice evolving post game.

PICK 8 - NEW YORK KNICKS

08’-09’ Overview- Record (32-50)
Notables- PF David Lee, G Nate Robinson, G Chris Duhon
The New York Knickerbockers are strictly transitioning from the Isaiah Thomas/ Marbury, big contracts to overpaid players, scandal ridden 00’s to the 10’s with big dreams in the terms of 23 with a Euro-style high scoring system led my Team USA next coach. The lone bright spot on the Knicks were David Lee a double-double machine, along with kryptonite Nate Robinson who began filling it up after the All-Star break. This current roster is depleted and many of these overpaid vets will be on the move. This team needs a spark to make 2010 a year for the promise.
Needs- PG who is facilitator or SG

Likely Draft Pick - PG Brandon Jennings [Italy, Virtus Roma]
“Young Money” is a unique situation. Supremely talented but could use some disciplined and refinery of skills to succeed at next level. Have to give Jennings props for sticking with a rough situation coming directly out of high school that hindered his playing time, strengths and earnings. With the right system, he could explode become legit NBA level guard for years to come. Extremely athletic and explosive on ball, length could translate him into a Rondo type guard. With that, could become good defender. Great in an open-court style game which in the NY could serve him well.

PICK 9 - TORONTO RAPTORS

08’-09’ Overview- Record (33-49)
Notables- PF Chris Bosh, PF Andrea Bargnani, PG Jose Calderon
It’s been a disappointing year north of the border for Phoenix Suns east. Headed by All-Start Chris Bosh, the Raptors tanked it after two successful playoff seasons previous. With a strong finish last year, the Raptors look to build on that this year. They Re-up Jose Calderon long-term and added some bulk up front with Reggie Evans via trade; all they need is a young scorer ala VC early days in T-Dot. 2009 off-season will tell a lot if they keep CB4 or lose him 2010.
Needs- True 2 Guard who can score…Viable scoring option on wing.

Likely Draft Pick - DeMar DeRozan [USC SG]
DeRozan is a freak athletically for his size. 6’7” 210, he is the prototype 2 guard, incredible vertical and explosive, simply explosive. Mid-range game is that of a grown man’s game. He flourishes greatly in between 18-20ft. Not overly aggressive when need be but can score in a variety of ways. Will develop with time into potential all-star caliber player.

PICK 10 - MILWAUKEE BUCKS

08’-09’ Overview- Record (33-48)
Notables- SG Michael Redd, C Andrew Bogut, SF Richard Jefferson
Milwaukee was certainly a playoff team if they stayed healthy. A good core of players in Redd, Jefferson, Bogut, Villanueva, and young buck Joe Alexander, Milwaukee has the pieces to compete in the Eastern Conference. An injury to Redd (ACL, MCL) and Bogut (back) hurt their progress. It would be interesting to see if they keep Villanueva and Sessions, if so depth at the point would help.
Needs- PG Depth and mobile forward

Likely Draft Pick - Jonny Flynn [Syracuse PG]
Flynn is that man! Clutch, high basketball IQ, great speed and quickness define him as a basketball player. Competes at a very high level, and is not afraid of the moment. Young floor general who is probably the best skilled guard in this draft. Tremendous defender, great length, will make impact in league. Remember the name.

PICK 11 - NEW JERSEY NETS

08’-09’ Overview- Record (34-48)

BROOKLYN! Man 2010 can’t come soon for the N.J. Nets, as they struggled but were in a position to make a playoff run last year. Led by Devin Harris a All-Star for years to come, and Vincent Lamar Carter who in my mind hasn’t lost his game and can still get it done, this team is young and with 10’ free agent class looming, one major player away from making it happen in the East again. With steady young bigs in Lopez and Yi Jilian, they got a good core to build from.

Likely Draft Pick - Terence Williams [Louisville F/G]
The “Emerald City” product is an all-around assassin. He defines the term Point Forward. T-Will is athletic beyond measure and doesn’t have a true weakness in his game. He’s solid in all areas, scoring, rebounding, being a facilitator and is an defensive threat that can guard multiple positions.

PICK 12 - CHARLOTTE BOBCATS

08’-09’ Overview- Record (35-47)
Notables - PG Raymond Felton, C Emeka Okafor, SF Gerald Wallace
Larry Brown is a patient man…..Well, not really. If the Bobcats management makes changes like his coaching moves, they will fall back seriously. This team headed by top picks with the likes of Okafor, Felton, D.J.Augustin, and have a veteran core with Wallace, Boris Diaw, and Raja Bell. A key part would only enhance this team run at the playoffs in 10’. Look out for Iverson rumors toward Charlotte……Just a thought.
Needs- Athletic Wing presence to complement PG’s

Likely Draft Pick - Gerald Henderson [Duke F]
Gerald is one of the best athletes on the wing in this 2009 draft. Since I’m a Dookie, Henderson’s is my guy. Evolving 2 guard but played bigger at Duke than his 6-5 frame. Can finish at the rim with ease and has good body control to the bucket. His offensive repertoire is getting better and with a few years could become a consistent offensive threat at the pro level. Length and athleticism will allow him to get clock early and be a nice fit on D.

PICK 13 - INDIANA PACERS

08’-09’ Overview- Record (36-46)
Notables- SF Danny Granger, PF/C Troy Murphy, F Mike Dunleavy
Indiana is on the brink of the playoffs and being a consistent threat for the playoffs yearly. Led by Danny Granger, this team has some pieces to build around and make work. With Murphy commanding attention down low, and Dunleavy making plays they seem ready to ball out. Jim O’Brien is at the helm so this team could make some noise.
Needs- Tough presence down low, PG

Likely Draft Pick - Dejuan Blair [Pittsburgh F]
Mr. Blair is straight Grown Man….Makin Grown Man Moves ala Mark Jackson. Plays the game tough and rugged with a passion to go a “100” on evey play. He’s a rebounding machine, that will rebound at an enormous clip if given the time to do so. Wide body, long, powerful makes him a handful on block. If he develop a consistent J from 15 ft, he can do work on a high level.

PICK 14 - PHOENIX SUNS

08’-09’ Overview- Record (46-36)
Notables- PG Steve Nash, PF Amare Stoudamire, SF Grant Hill, SG Jason Richardson
Suns management costs their team the 2009 season. With switching coaching styles from Terry Porter, a grind it out coach, to Alvin Gentry, a more up-tempo coach, it’s like they contradicted what they do best and that get up and down with the roundball. With Nasty Nash, 35, Hill, 36, they need a serious youth movement to happen. With STAT’s injury to his eye, and J-Rich getting in trouble and getting his 360 lay-up blocked from behind….Thanks Bron, The Suns need change quick.
Needs- Athletic guard or forward.

Likely Draft Pick - Jrue Holiday [UCLA G]
Mr. Holiday, the Cali product had a very low-key season in Westwood and result of that didn’t explode onto the map due to coaching and veteran presence. But Young Fella can still bust chops.
A Combo guard with size, length and athleticism will be a force on the defensive end and he’ll garner burn that way out the gate. Very astute ballhandler that packs a variety of moves to get past the defender and finish at the cup. If selected will learn from one of the best at the PG spot.
